Information Bachelor of Arts Exam Regulations 2011/2013

Major

The English and American Studies Major consists of 108 credit points (CP), 58 weekly hours per semester (SWS) and six semesters. The interdisciplinary compulsory electives part consists of 18 CP.

2011/13 Exam Regulations (German)

During the first year students will gain basic knowledge in literary, linguistic and medieval studies. You will also be able to deepen your use of the English language with the Language Skills 1 Module. 

The Basic-Phase is completed with final exams in all four modules. 

During the Intermediate-Phase you will strengthen your basic knowledge. Further you will be introduced to practical knowledge and skills for your academic works. With the Methods of Academic Writing and Research Module you will be able to practice writing your first academic work and learn how to do research properly. 

The Intermediate-Phase consists of two modules, one focusing on literary studies, the other on linguistics. The Intermediate Module Linguistics consist of a compulsory lecture and an elective seminar. Both modules are completed with final exams. 

In the Advanced-Phase you will be able to focus your studies what interests you most, or continue to learn about a variety of topics. The Advanced Modules eventually lead to your bachelor's thesis. Two out of three Advanced Modules have to be completed with final exams. 

The Major English and American studies also requires you to complete a Career Orientation Module. In this module you are able to learn practical skill or do an internship. This module can be done in your 2nd or 3rd Year of studying. 

During your 2nd and 3rd Year you will also have to complete the Language Skills 2 module with two exams.

Minor

The English and American Studies Minor consists of 54 CP, 28 weekly hours per semester and six semesters.

In your 1st and 2nd Year you will complete two out three basic modules and gain basic knowledge in literary, linguistic or medieval studies. You will also be able to strengthen your language skills with the Language Skill 1 module. 

During the Intermediate-Phase you will continue your basic knowledge in the subjects of your choosing. You have to complete two Intermediate modules. 

Please note that you can only take courses that relate to the basic modules you have completed.
